Clonmel Make History

Clonmel Commercials made history yesterday by claiming their first ever Munster club football title after victory over a fancied Nemo Rangers of Cork in Mallow yesterday. It is a great achievement for a club in Tipperary to claim such a prestigious victory.

It didn’t look like Clonmel would be successful as they trailed by two points heading into injury time. Clonmel won a free fifty yards from their goals. Seamus Kennedy launched a high ball towards the Nemo goalmouth where the Clonmel forwards were eagerly waiting. Michael Quinlivan towered above the Nemo Rangers full back to break the ball down to himself and shrugged off two Nemo Rangers players before side footing the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net past goal keeper Michael Martin to spark wild celebrations from players, coaches and fans who still had to endure another half minute of play before referee blew the final whistle which allowed subs, coaches and fans enter the field to congratulate there Munster final winning heros.

For the opposition Nemo Rangers, what a bitter disappointing way to lose a Munster final. The sides were level five times throughout the first half in wet and windy conditions in Mallow. The teams went in at half time level at five points a piece much to the delight of the travelling Clonmel supporters.Nemo never trailed in the first half but Clonmels persistence and desire kept them in the game.

Clonmel went two points up early in the second half with two Quinlivan 45s. Nemo went twenty minutes without scoring but that barren spell was ended when Kerrigan pointed. Connolly, Horgan and O’Driscoll added further points to give them a two point lead heading into injury time. It looked to be the end of Clonmels challenge until Quinllivan popped up with the winning goal in injury time.
